  • What is an N95 filter?

Most commonly used for Flu or Influenza prevention, the N95 filters are effective according to the CDC (US-based health protection agency - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in helping to prevent the spread of Flu, Swine Flu and Avian Flu transmission from person to person. “N95” means that the mask can filter out at least 95% of particles of all sizes from the air. That includes particles less than 0.1 microns in size.

What are the face scarfs made of?

The face scarfs are produced using a soft, silky, stretchy, machine washable and quick-drying 180gsm Lycra fabric. Fabric composition - 82% Polyester and 18% Lycra.

    Are they medical grade?

It is more important now than ever to ensure all medical-grade scarfs are available for our incredible health workers who need them the most. Our face scarfs are designed to provide peace of mind and extra protection for all Australians whilst heading out of the home. Strictly speaking, they are not considered medical grade. However, the face scarfs have been created following closely, the key safety features of their medical-grade counterparts, including the inclusion of the N95 filter and the padded and mouldable adjustment wire, that seals any gaps around the nose. Further to this, the drape of the scarf around your face and neck creates a natural air enclosure, that is easier to breathe through and less stuffy than their medical-grade counterparts. The face scarf is, therefore, less likely than it's medical-grade counterpart, to create glasses fog and the feeling of claustrophobia to the wearer. The face scarfs come in a range of sizes to ensure that the wearer gets the best possible fit in terms of comfort and safety - you don’t want the scarf to be too tight or too loose. The face scarfs are designed to be comfortable and provide you with the best possible protection, when worn repetitively, for long periods of time.

Will the scarf stop me getting sick?

Several new studies have confirmed, what many health experts have maintained, since the Coronavirus spread across the world - that personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face coverings, goggles and gloves together with social distancing and improved hygiene, help reduce the disease’s rate of spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) has examined the data from 172 studies from 16 countries and six continents. They found that without a face covering, the risk of transmitting the COVID-19, SARS-coV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. is 17.4%, but with a N95 face covering that number drops to 3.1%. A study conducted by the US Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that sailors that did not wear face coverings, experienced an 80.8% infection rate, whilst those who used face coverings had a 55.8% infection rate. These findings were echoed by a British study, led by scientists from Cambridge & Greenwich universities, that the wearing of face coverings “by the public could significantly reduce the rate of COVID-19 spread, prevent further disease waves and allow less stringent lock-down regimes. The effect is greatest when 100% of the public wear face masks”. A study that was published by the non-profit Institute of Labour Economics (IZA) investigated the German city of Jena, it found that after face coverings were introduced on the 6th of April 2020, the number of new infections fell to zero. The study also supported the hypothesis that the face coverings could have made a significant impact if they had been used earlier and more widely.

How do I put the mask on and off?

It is recommended that you wash your face scarf before use.

    • Step 1: Before putting on the mask, wash or clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. Scarfs are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
    • Step 2: Insert N95 carbon activated filter into the internal pocket of the face scarf.
    • Step 3: Slide the face scarf over your head and then place, momentarily, around your neck. Ensure the nose grip and filter are at the top of the mask and at the front of your face.
    • Step 4: Raise the top of the face scarf up over your nose and pinch the nose grip securely over the bridge of your nose. Make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
    • Step 5: Before taking off the mask, wash or clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
    • Step 6: To remove your face mask – firstly, grip the mask on either side of your head, directly behind the ears, secondly, close your eyes and thirdly, pull upwards, letting the mask slip gently, off and over the head. Do not touch the outwards front of your mask, during this process.

Ensure that you wash your face scarf after each use, making sure to remove the filter first, with clean hands. To prevent contamination to your filter, lie the mask face front down on a flat surface and remove the filter from the back, with clean hands. Keep the filter in a clean, airtight container until next use.

How do you wash the scarfs?

Please ensure you remove the N95 filter with clean hands, before washing your face scarf. To prevent contamination to your filter, lie the mask face front down (i.e. nose piece down) on a flat surface and remove the filter from the back, with clean hands. Keep the filter in a clean air-tight container until next use. Always wash your face scarf using a gentle warm machine wash and your preferred washing powder or liquid. This should be enough to remove any germs or viruses. Do not bleach. Line dry in shade. Do not tumble dry. Cool iron, however, this fabric is naturally crease free and ironing should not be necessary. Do not dry clean. It is recommended that you wash your face scarf before use.

Are the face scarfs environmentally sound?

Medical grade face masks are designed to be used once or for a maximum of 4 x hours and then thrown away. The Design of the face scarf has been created to be reused and worn multiple times without degradation to its appearance, comfort and health benefits. Given that the N95 replaceable filters are small and need only to be replaced once a week (if using 8 x hours a day), the landfill footprint is naturally so much smaller, than the traditional, disposable, medical-grade face masks. Already there is reporting that non-recyclable personal protective equipment (PPE) such as Disposable Face Masks and Latex Gloves are becoming the new environment scourge, making their way into the world’s oceans, natural waterways and sewers.
